Dev Blog #38

Hello Survivors!

We’re back with April’s Dev Blog! We’ve been hard at work on a native version of Rust Console Edition for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. To keep things simple:  moving forward, we’ll refer to this as the New Gen version, and the current version as the old gen version.

Game development takes time, and while we’re not quite ready to announce a release date or confirm the final list of features, rest assured that once we have solid details, you’ll be the first to know. We’ve been fully transparent throughout this process, and that won’t change. If things seem quiet, it just means the team is fully focused on making this new version the best it can be. Good things take time, and we truly appreciate your patience and support.

Now, while we can’t share a release date just yet, we can give you some details about the upgrade path for current Rust Console Edition. So let’s kick off this Dev Blog there, shall we?

Do I have to buy Rust Console Edition again to play the New Gen version?
Ah, the million dollar question! You can put your wallet down because we have some great news to share.

When the native PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S version of Rust Console Edition launches, current players will receive a free upgrade. The upgrade will match the version of the game you already own. So if you bought the base version, you will get the New Gen base version. If you own Deluxe or Ultimate, you will receive the equivalent on the New Gen version at no extra cost and with no extra steps.

If you are wondering what happens if you want to upgrade from base to Deluxe or Ultimate, we are working on something and will share more close to the release. Just know that this is being taken into consideration.

For new players picking up Rust Console Edition for the first time, the New Gen version will be sold at full price. We will reveal the price at a later date when we get closer to release.

To the ones who have supported us over the years, this free upgrade is our way of saying thank you. We appreciate the support and the passionate feedback. You are the reason we keep going.

Work on the New Gen version of Rust Console Edition is going really well. Everything is on track and the game is coming together nicely. We’ve been sharing short clips over on our Twitter/X and Instagram page and the response from you all has been incredible. Seriously, we see the love and we appreciate it.

On the visual side, this version is a huge step up. Graphics are looking sharper, performance is smoother, but the team is still working hard on adding even more visual improvements and optimizing everything under the hood. These changes might not always be flashy, but they are key to delivering the best possible experience. We’re hoping to share a new gameplay video soon so you can see the progress for yourself. It might be ready next month, but if not, it won’t be much longer. Stay tuned for updates!

We’ve also noticed a lot of you asking how skins look in the New Gen version, especially in combat. Great question. To give you a better idea, we’ve prepared two short videos showing off the Necronomic Skin Set in action. Check them out below.

While part of the team continues building the New Gen version, the rest is focused on the next update for the current edition of the game. This update will bring some new variants of the Donut map, bug fixes, and improvements to community servers. As always, full patch notes will be posted on Twitter/X and our Website once everything is ready to launch.

Now, for those wondering about a PTB version for the New Gen edition… Yes, there will be one. Whether it goes live right at launch or a bit later is still being decided. The current plan is to release it when we are ready to test the first post-launch content update. If that changes, we’ll be sure to keep you in the loop.

This final section is for all the content creators out there. Recently, we announced the upcoming launch of our official Content Creators Program, and we’re getting closer to making it live. This is our way of saying thank you for the amazing content you’ve been creating and to give you even more tools to work with. If you would like to register for it, please click here.

Some of the perks include access to new cosmetics as they’re released, early access to Dev Blogs and patch notes so you can prepare your content ahead of time (under embargo, of course), potential exclusive cosmetics in the future, and a direct line of communication with the dev team. We’ll also have a dedicated Discord server for members, plus shoutouts on our social channels to help spotlight your work.

These are just the starting perks. We’re open to feedback, so if you have suggestions on what would make the program even better, we’re all ears.

That said, we do want to touch base on something we’ve seen a lot recently, especially with the excitement around the New Gen version. There’s been a wave of speculative videos being treated as fact, and while we love theory crafting, it’s important to be clear when something is your own opinion versus something we’ve officially confirmed. When expectations are set by speculation, it can lead to confusion and frustration, and nobody wants that.

That’s it for this month’s Dev Blog. We hope you’re just as excited about what’s coming as we are. There’s still plenty more to share in the future, and we can’t wait to bring you along for the ride.

- See you on the island.
