DEV BLOG #3

Hello survivors! With the first month of 2022 almost coming to an end, we would like to take the time to share with the community what our plans are for Rust Console Edition in the near future, and what the team is working on at the moment.

But first, a special thanks to everyone who has been supporting the project thus far,  the support from many of you has been nothing short of amazing! We will keep working hard to make sure everyone enjoys Rust, and to bring more exciting content to our beloved title!

What have we been working on?

Since the team got back from the holiday break, we’ve been working hard on the issues that persisted after the release of patch 1.21. On the 13th of January we managed to fix most of the bugs that had a huge impact on the gameplay with patch 1.22, and today with the release of update 1.23 we plan to tackle even more bugs so the players can have a better experience in game.

Today is also the first monthly wipe of 2022, and this is a very exciting time for our community. For clarification this will not be a BP wipe on monthly servers, but we will have a BP wipe for the weekly ones.

The Oil Rig still needs more work in terms of optimization and balancing, so we will keep working on it and collecting feedback to see what needs to be improved before releasing it on the main branch. We are planning some performance testing around the Oil Rig in February, so if you are part of the Public Testing Branch and you want to participate, please be sure to keep an eye on our Testing Branch Discord Server.

That’s not all, we also plan to bring the Large Oil Rig back during the month of February to test it and to make sure it’s ready to be put in the main branch with the Small Oil Rig. The name of the update will be Offshore Blowout! On top of the Oil Rigs we will have the addition of the grenade launcher and some awesome skins themed around the Rigs!

Following patch 1.23 we will be testing potential fixes for some of the more troublesome bugs that still persist in the game. All of this will allow us to bring the best possible updates to the live game, continually improving the stability for the players and rolling out new content updates.

After both Oil Rigs are released on the main branch, we will then add the next content update to staging. It’s still too early to confirm what that content update will bring but we always try to keep a balance between what players want and feasibility, as the restrictions we have in terms of hardware require the team to find more methods of optimization to bring certain features to our version of the game. We will keep following our own development progression separate to the PC version, with the needs of our players in mind.

Community servers are being worked on separately to the content updates so we can speed up the process. The hurdle left to clear is to reduce the memory usage per server, and while progress is being made regarding the memory usage, we still have some way to go. More optimization will keep happening to the servers as time goes on, and hopefully in the near future this will allow us to implement community servers. We understand the need for them and how important they are to Rust, but we want to make sure that the service provided with them is as good as it can be.

And time for a little teaser! To celebrate the Year of the Tiger we will also have a special skin bundle available in our Skin Store today! I’m happy to announce that this bundle will feature a skin for the Thompson. This was by far the most requested weapon skin according to the skin popularity poll we ran a few months ago, and we are happy to finally add it to the game!

This is all we have to share for our Dev Blog #3. Expect the next one to come at the end of February with more updates on what the Rust team has been up to. Hope you all have a fantastic day survivors and happy rock day!
